Morocco’s dam fill rate reached 68.79% on Friday, August 14, nearly double the 34.72% recorded a year earlier, according to data from the Water Research and Planning Directorate at the Ministry of Equipment and Water reviewed on Saturday.
Reservoirs held 11.71 billion cubic meters of water out of a normal national capacity of 17.03 billion cubic meters. The annual increase amounted to 34.07 percentage points, despite a modest decline following successive heatwaves.
The Tensift basin recorded the highest fill rate at 83.78%, followed by Sebou at 81.92%, Loukkos at 81.72% and Bouregreg at 81.06%.
The strongest recovery occurred at Al Massira dam in the Oum Er-Rbia basin. Its fill rate rose from 3.38% in August 2025 to 40.70%, lifting stored water from about 90 million cubic meters to more than 1 billion.
Al Massira is Morocco’s second-largest reservoir and supplies drinking water to the Casablanca-Settat region while supporting irrigation across the Doukkala agricultural plains. Its recovery reduces immediate pressure on two major sources of demand but does not remove Morocco’s longer-term water deficit.
Several basins remained below the national average. Draa-Oued Noun recorded 32.82%, Souss-Massa 49.62% and Moulouya 54.61%.
Ziz-Guir-Rheris was the only basin to post an annual decline, falling from 48.63% to 41.39%. The figures show that southern and eastern Morocco benefited less from the rainfall that drove the national recovery.
Separate ministry data published through the “Al Ma Dialna” platform showed mixed daily movements through August 10. Allal Al Fassi dam gained 1.2 million cubic meters, taking its fill rate to 95.3%, while Ahmed Al Hansali received 700,000 cubic meters and reached 80.6%.
Idriss I and Al Wahda dams lost 2.5 million and 2.2 million cubic meters, respectively. The ministry attributed such short-term declines to routine releases for drinking water and irrigation.
