The family of 27-year-old Moroccan woman Bouthayna El Araj has launched an urgent appeal to save her life after she suffered severe injuries in a traffic accident in the Dominican Republic.
The accident left her in critical condition and required emergency brain surgery, while the private hospital treating her is demanding a $40,000 financial guarantee to continue providing medical care.
Speaking to Hespress, Mohamed Amine El Araj, the victim’s brother, said his sister was involved in a serious road accident four days ago while in the Dominican Republic. He explained that she suffered internal bleeding in her brain after a heavy fall during the crash.
He added that Bouthayna did not have health insurance covering her medical expenses. The family only learned of the accident after she had already undergone surgery, which was successful, before being informed that the hospital was requesting a substantial financial guarantee to continue her treatment.
According to her brother, Bouthayna’s condition has shown slight improvement but remains unstable. She continues to require intensive medical care and close monitoring because doctors have not ruled out the possibility of further complications or additional internal injuries.
He said donations from charitable individuals helped cover the cost of the emergency surgery and part of her medical expenses. However, the hospital has informed the family that it must receive a $40,000 guarantee within a short deadline or it will suspend further treatment.
Mohamed Amine El Araj said his sister is alone in the Dominican Republic, with no family members by her side. He explained that he has begun renewing his passport so he can travel to join her as soon as possible. He also submitted a request to Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, asking it to intervene and coordinate with the hospital and the relevant authorities.
He added that the family has struggled to communicate with Morocco’s consular representation and is currently receiving updates on Bouthayna’s condition through a friend who is with her in the Dominican Republic.
He stressed that his sister had not traveled for tourism, explaining that she had been working in the Dominican Republic and was preparing to start a new job this week before the accident occurred.
The victim’s brother appealed to charitable organizations, humanitarian associations, and groups that support Moroccans abroad to help secure the required financial guarantee or intervene with the relevant authorities to ensure her treatment continues.
He also emphasized the urgency of traveling to be with his sister, saying that having a family member by her side would provide essential emotional support. According to him, she regains consciousness only briefly before becoming highly distressed, forcing medical staff to sedate her to prevent her from accidentally removing or damaging the medical equipment attached to her.
The family’s appeal has circulated widely on social media in recent hours, with many users calling for urgent humanitarian and official intervention to ensure the young Moroccan woman continues receiving treatment while efforts to assist her remain underway.
