Moroccan authorities have brought a wildfire under control after it broke out Monday evening in the forested area between the communes of Aourir and Taghazout in the Souss-Massa region.
Strong winds accelerated the spread of the fire, carrying flames across vegetation dominated by secondary grasses and creating multiple fire hotspots that required an extensive emergency response.
Hicham Zahdi, regional director of the National Agency for Water and Forests in Souss-Massa, said the winds complicated firefighting efforts by spreading the flames from one location to another.
“The winds were carrying the flames from one place to another, which contributed to the dispersion of the fire hotspots,” Zahdi told Hespress AR.
He said the situation was under control on Tuesday, with firefighting teams continuing to extinguish the remaining active hotspots.
“The situation is currently under control, and we hope weather conditions remain stable and that wind speeds do not increase so we can fully extinguish the remaining fires,” he added.
Zahdi said personnel from the Royal Gendarmerie, Auxiliary Forces, Civil Protection, and local residents remained deployed in the area to prevent any flare-ups.
According to the regional forestry official, the fire primarily affected secondary vegetation, while argan trees in the area sustained only limited exposure and were largely spared from the flames.
Local sources said the wildfire started in the forest near the village of Ikrdan in the commune of Aourir before spreading toward neighboring Taghazout, prompting an overnight mobilization of emergency services and volunteers from nearby communities.
