United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for protecting the rights and dignity of all people arriving in Ceuta, following the recent rise in arrivals to the Spanish territory.
Speaking through his deputy spokesperson, Farhan Haq, Guterres stressed the need to make sure that the rights and human dignity of every individual entering the area are fully respected, according to a report by Spanish news agency Europa Press.
Spain says an estimated 49,000 migrants entered Ceuta over a 24-hour period. Many entered by swimming around the Tarajal pier or crossing border fences. The group included young men, families, women, and children.
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) stated that no single cause explains the increase in crossings. The agency noted that several factors are at play, including a recent ruling by the Spanish Supreme Court, though UNHCR cautioned against blaming any single event.
In response to the arrivals, Moroccan and Spanish authorities agreed to step up their joint coordination. Both countries are working to manage the situation on the ground and arrange returns for those who entered irregularly.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that Morocco and Spain are cooperating closely to restore normal conditions at the border.
