Security forces deployed tear gas and water cannon to disperse a thousands-strong crowd of mainly young men gathered to attempt a border crossing.
Despite the clashes, hundreds of would-be migrants continued to arrive in the area, climbing the steep hillsides overlooking the border crossing.

Officials in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave on the North African coast, said that 60,000 people had managed to enter during a recent surge in migrants.
On the Moroccan side of the frontier, AFP reporters saw debris from stone-throwing and burnt out cars, and dozens of young men turned away from the border.
According to Spanish officials, Rabat and Madrid are negotiating measures to return the recent arrivals.
