Moroccan international Azzedine Ounahi has returned to the forefront of the European transfer market after impressing with the Atlas Lions at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, emerging as a key summer target for Dutch giants Ajax.

According to several media reports, including information from Italian transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Ajax has entered negotiations with Spanish club Girona over a potential deal for the Moroccan midfielder, who has become one of the club’s top priorities to strengthen its midfield.

The 26-year-old enjoyed an outstanding World Cup campaign, featuring in all of Morocco’s matches before the team’s quarterfinal elimination against France. Ounahi scored twice in the Atlas Lions’ Round-of-16 victory over Canada, further cementing the reputation he first established during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

His international success follows a strong season at club level. After regaining his form during a loan spell at Greek side Panathinaikos, Ounahi joined Girona, where he quickly established himself as a regular starter under head coach Míchel.

Ounahi remains under contract with Girona until June 2030. His deal reportedly includes a release clause worth around €25 million, which is expected to be the main obstacle for Ajax as the Dutch club seeks to negotiate more favorable financial terms.

In the Netherlands, the Moroccan midfielder has already received praise from local observers. Writing for Dutch newspaper Het Parool, journalist Henk Spaan described Ounahi as a highly talented player with exceptional technical ability.

Spaan argued that the player’s current market value—estimated at around €10 million by Transfermarkt—could represent an attractive opportunity for Ajax as the club looks to reinforce its squad ahead of the new season.
