A 39-year-old woman died in Algeciras after a motorcycle accident during celebrations of Morocco’s World Cup victory over Canada, Spanish radio station Cadena SER reported on Sunday.
The accident happened around 11 p.m. Saturday in the San García neighbourhood, at the intersection of the Getares road and Avenida 28 de Febrero, near a Supeco supermarket.
According to initial police findings, the woman was riding as a passenger on a high-powered motorcycle when a Moroccan flag she was wearing around her neck became caught in the rear wheel.
Local police officers who arrived at the scene began CPR and used a defibrillator from their patrol vehicle, but were unable to revive her. Emergency medical teams later transported her to Punta Europa Hospital, where she died shortly after arrival.
Police have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the crash. The motorcycle driver, identified as the woman’s husband, tested negative for alcohol.
