Surgeons at Zemmouri Provincial Hospital in Kenitra successfully performed a highly complex cancer operation on an 80-year-old woman suffering from advanced localized bladder cancer, hospital officials said Thursday.

The procedure, carried out Wednesday morning, involved an extended anterior pelvic exenteration, one of the most demanding surgeries in urologic oncology.

According to hospital officials, the operation included the removal of the patient’s bladder, uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and the anterior wall of the vagina. Surgeons also performed a non-continent urinary diversion to restore urinary function following the removal of the affected organs.

Medical sources described the surgery as one of the most complex procedures in the field of urological cancer treatment, calling it a significant milestone for healthcare services in Kenitra.

The operation was performed entirely by Moroccan surgeons and medical staff. Hospital officials said such procedures are rarely conducted successfully in non-university hospitals, highlighting what they described as the growing expertise of the institution’s medical, nursing and technical teams.

Officials said the achievement forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen Zemmouri Provincial Hospital’s role as a regional healthcare reference center serving the Rabat-North area through the expansion of specialized medical and surgical services.

The development is expected to reduce the need for patients to travel to university hospitals in Rabat to undergo complex surgical procedures, improving access to advanced healthcare closer to home.

Hospital administrators said the operation demonstrates the institution’s commitment to expanding specialized treatment options and improving the quality of patient care throughout the region.

The hospital’s management also praised the medical, nursing, technical and administrative teams involved in the procedure, describing the operation as an example of collective effort and dedication to patient care.

Officials said the successful surgery reinforces the hospital’s ambitions to strengthen its position as a leading healthcare institution in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region and continue developing advanced medical services for residents.
