Morocco took over the presidency of a ten-country Western Mediterranean transport forum on Wednesday, giving Rabat a two-year mandate to shape regional priorities on freight corridors, digitalisation and climate-resilient infrastructure, the Transport Ministry said.
Transport Minister Abdessamad Kayouh formally assumed the 2026-2028 presidency of the Group of Transport Ministers of the Western Mediterranean, known as GTMO 5+5, from Malta at a ministerial conference in Rabat.
The group brings together Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania with Spain, France, Italy, Portugal and Malta.
Kayouh said Morocco would use its presidency to support multimodal transport networks, digital systems, lower-carbon mobility and more resilient supply chains.
He also presented Tanger Med, Nador West Med and the planned Dakhla Atlantic port as evidence of Morocco’s growing role as a logistics link between Europe and Africa.
The meeting adopted a Rabat conclusions document intended to guide cooperation during Morocco’s presidency, but the full text had not been published by Wednesday.
Under Malta’s previous presidency, the group focused on updating its multimodal network, exchanging technical expertise and advancing the Trans-Maghreb Corridor as a backbone for regional integration.
Morocco is seeking to connect that Mediterranean agenda with its wider Atlantic strategy, including plans to improve access for landlocked Sahel states.
