Spain’s Supreme Court has ordered the state to pay €2.5 million in compensation to a 75-year-old Moroccan citizen for a severe judicial error. The man wrongfully spent 15 years in prison, followed by three years of probation, after being convicted of rape.
He was fully exonerated after DNA test results proved his innocence, revealing that the actual perpetrator was a Spanish citizen named Antonio Garcia Carbonell.
The wrongful conviction initially occurred because the victims confused the Moroccan man with the real criminal due to their striking physical resemblance during a police lineup.
