Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita met Monday in Rabat with U.N. Assistant Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, who is on his second official visit to the North African kingdom.
According to Moroccan authorities, discussions focused on Morocco’s contribution to United Nations peacekeeping operations and its role in promoting international peace and security.
Morocco’s involvement in U.N. peacekeeping dates back to 1960 and reflects what officials described as a long-standing commitment to multilateral efforts aimed at conflict prevention and stabilization.
The kingdom is currently the ninth-largest contributor of troops to U.N. peacekeeping missions worldwide. It also holds the presidency of the U.N. Peacebuilding Commission for 2026 and serves as coordinator of the Non-Aligned Movement on peacekeeping issues, positions Moroccan officials say reflect the country’s standing within the international community on matters related to peace and security.
Lacroix’s visit comes as the United Nations pursues a series of institutional reforms launched by U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres.
These include the “U.N. 80” initiative, which aims to streamline and modernize the organization’s Secretariat, as well as a broader strategic review of peacekeeping operations and the international peace and security architecture.
The reform efforts seek to strengthen the political dimensions of conflict resolution and adapt U.N. peace operations to evolving global security challenges.
Neither side announced specific agreements following the meeting. However, the talks underscored Morocco’s continued engagement with the United Nations at a time when peacekeeping missions and multilateral conflict-management mechanisms are undergoing significant review and reform.
