Scotland have called up teenage midfielder Tyler Fletcher to their squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Billy Gilmour was ruled out with a knee injury sustained during a friendly against Curaçao, the Scottish Football Association announced.
The 19-year-old Fletcher joins Steve Clarke’s squad just days before the start of the tournament, in what marks a remarkable rise for one of Scotland’s most promising young talents.
Fletcher’s selection comes only a day after making his senior international debut in Scotland’s friendly match against Curaçao on Saturday. He will now travel with the squad to the United States for the World Cup.
The Manchester United youngster enjoyed a breakthrough season at club level and was recently awarded the Denzil Haroun Trophy, given annually to the club’s best young player.
In a statement posted on social media, the Scottish Football Association confirmed Fletcher’s inclusion following Gilmour’s injury.
“Following the confirmation of Billy Gilmour’s injury, we can announce that 19-year-old Tyler Fletcher has been added to our 2026 World Cup squad after making his senior debut against Curaçao. Welcome aboard, Tyler,” the statement said.
Fletcher also carries a notable football pedigree. He is the son of former Scotland international Darren Fletcher, who captained the national team and spent the majority of his playing career at Manchester United.
Scotland are set to begin their World Cup campaign against Haiti on June 14 before facing Brazil and Morocco in Group C.
The loss of Gilmour, a key midfielder who plays for Napoli, is a significant setback for Clarke’s side. However, Fletcher’s rapid emergence offers Scotland an exciting alternative as they prepare for their return to football’s biggest stage.
