Chergui El Hachemi, secretary-general of the General Union of International and National Transport Professionals, said Moroccan truck drivers who managed to cross from Mali into Mauritania are now trying to limit their financial losses by selling their cargo locally instead of continuing toward other African destinations.
Speaking to Hespress AR, El Hachemi said professional transport organizations are urging drivers to remain where they are and avoid further movement for safety reasons amid the deteriorating regional security situation.
He added that many Moroccan drivers are actively seeking solutions for goods they were unable to deliver deeper into sub-Saharan Africa, including selling merchandise inside Mauritania to avoid major economic losses.
El Hachemi also referred to unconfirmed reports claiming that two Moroccan trucks in Mali were set on fire last Sunday. He stressed, however, that the information has not been independently verified.
According to the transport official, the two trucks were reportedly empty, and no information was immediately available regarding the drivers. He noted that most Moroccan drivers stranded in Mali had already managed to cross safely into Mauritania.
The union leader called for logistical and institutional support for the affected drivers so they can manage their goods and return safely to Morocco without severe financial damage.
For his part, Mustapha Chaoun, president of the African Union of Transport and Logistics Organizations, said there is still no confirmed information regarding the alleged arson attack on Moroccan trucks.
Chaoun explained that accounts received from various professional sources remain contradictory, adding that only one sector professional had confirmed the alleged incident while several others denied having reliable information about it.
