A delegation from the Moroccan embassy in Mauritania has helped resolve the congestion affecting Moroccan trucks at the Rosso border crossing with Senegal, according to transport sector representatives.
Cherki El Hachmi, national secretary-general of the General Union of International and National Transport Professionals, said a delegation from the Moroccan embassy, in coordination with Mauritanian officials, carried out a field visit to the Mauritanian side of Rosso following appeals from Moroccan drivers.
The delegation traveled to the area to assess the traffic bottleneck that had disrupted the movement of goods and vehicles in recent weeks, El Hachmi told Hespress.
He said the situation has improved significantly since the visit, with the traffic disruption ending on Monday. The efforts allowed nearly 280 trucks, including dozens of Moroccan vehicles, to cross the border successfully by the middle of this week.
Regarding ferry operations at the crossing, El Hachmi said Mauritanian authorities are working to prevent similar disruptions in the future and ensure the smooth flow of traffic.
The increase in traffic through Rosso comes amid shifting geopolitical conditions in the region following the deterioration of the security situation in Mali, which had previously served as a key transit route to West African markets.
El Hachmi added that one ferry is currently operating normally, while a second vessel remains out of service as maintenance work and the procurement of spare parts continue in an effort to return it to operation as quickly as possible.
