Malian authorities have temporarily barred Moroccan trucks from entering the country as a precautionary measure amid ongoing security concerns, according to a Hespress AR source from Morocco’s General Union of International and National Transport Professionals.

The source told Hespress that several Moroccan truck drivers have continued attempting to enter Mali despite the deteriorating security situation. Malian authorities have turned them back to prevent them from falling victim to armed groups and criminal organizations operating in the region.

The source said the security situation remains highly volatile, with transport convoys facing a direct threat of attack.

According to the source, Malian authorities continue to provide armed escorts for foreign freight convoys from countries including Senegal, Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone. The convoys are typically accompanied by four security vehicles in front and four behind.

However, the source said the escorts cannot fully eliminate the risk of attacks, particularly if vehicles leave the designated route or come under a surprise assault.

“In the event of heavy gunfire, losing five or six trucks would be a major loss,” the source said.

The source praised Moroccan authorities, as well as Morocco’s embassies in Mali and Mauritania, for supporting the decision to suspend the entry of Moroccan trucks in order to protect drivers’ lives.

As a result of the precautionary measures, Moroccan transport operators are currently unloading their cargo in Guerguerat, near Morocco’s southern border, while others have rerouted shipments through Senegal, despite the significantly longer journey and logistical challenges posed by the alternative route.

No official statement has yet been issued by Malian authorities regarding the reported restrictions.
