A retired Spanish Civil Guard officer under investigation in the “drug tunnel” case linking Morocco and Ceuta admitted before court to maintaining contact with a suspected drug trafficker known as “Messi of Hashish,” according to Spanish media reports.

The suspect, currently in custody, said the phone contacts were part of “professional consultations” and acknowledged receiving a luxury watch valued at around €40,000 following a meeting in Tangier.

Spanish media reports said the former officer denied corruption allegations despite audio recordings allegedly referring to shipments arriving from West Africa. He later claimed the conversations concerned seasonal fruit imports.

Investigators from Spain’s anti narcotics unit UDYCO are probing possible links between the trafficking network and members of law enforcement agencies, while also examining trips reportedly made by the retired officer alongside another suspect nicknamed the “drug engineer.”

Searches linked to the investigation uncovered cash, luxury watches, properties inside and outside Ceuta and an Audi Q5 Sportback vehicle, further intensifying scrutiny around the officer’s finances and lifestyle.

The case centers on a suspected underground tunnel allegedly used for hashish trafficking between Morocco and Ceuta, in one of the region’s highest profile organized crime investigations in recent years.
