Morocco’s Doaa Choukri won the bronze medal in the women’s under-61 kg U21 category at the World Karate Championships for cadets, juniors and U21 athletes, held from October 14 to 18 in Bielsko-Biała, southern Poland.
Choukri secured third place on Sunday with a 6-2 victory over Belarusian Yana Konnava in the kumite bronze-medal bout.
Her achievement came on the final day of the competition, following her qualification for the medal bout through Wednesday’s preliminary rounds.
Two other Moroccan athletes also competed for bronze on Sunday but missed out on the podium. Roumayssae Tarkou narrowly lost 8-7 to Italy’s Emma Colletti in the women’s under-55kg category, while Samir Sadini fell 5-3 to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Vedad Mujic in the men’s under-67kg category.
Morocco has another opportunity to add to its medal tally, with Haitam Oufkir advancing to the final of the men’s under-75kg U21 category. He is scheduled to face Spain’s Izan Martin Peña on Sunday in a bid to secure the world title.
Morocco is competing at the 14th edition of the championships with a 20-member delegation comprising 10 boys and 10 girls across the cadet, junior and U21 categories. The event has drawn more than 2,000 athletes from 114 countries, according to the World Karate Federation (WKF).
