The Ministry of Equality and Family launched, on April 24 in Rabat Morocco’s first central unit for women victims of violence, a mechanism designed to turn national protection policies into direct support for women on the ground in the fight against gender based violence.
The newly inaugurated office in Rabat is a specialized structure created to guide and support the victims through different services, such as offering legal guidance, psychological support, and social assistance in one place.
54.4% of women in Morocco reported experiencing violence, including psychological, economic, physical, and sexual according to the 2019 second national survey on the prevalence of violence against women launched by the Ministry of family.
Reporting remains another barrier as 51% of Moroccans consider it likely that victims of gender based violence will be criticised, harassed, or shamed by others in the community according to a 2023 Afrobarometer study.
Officials say the unit will offer immediate access to trained professionals. Through programs such as “Takafol,” developed with the support of the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, staff are trained in victim reception, specialized listening, and legal procedures. This reduces the risk of secondary victimization often reported in traditional systems.
Cross-regional protocols such as “Himaya” have also been put in place to ensure that women receive the same level of care regardless of where they seek it
Platforms such as Amane-Laki can support younger victims, who are more likely to face electronic violence, by helping them report cases and receive guidance more quickly.
