Reports of violence against women in Morocco fell for the third year in a row in 2024, according to the annual report of the Office of the Public Prosecutor, which recorded 73,645 complaints, down 14 percent from 2023 and nearly 23 percent compared with 2021.
The report says prosecutors continued to process complaints through dedicated support units in courts nationwide, handling reception, listening, guidance and protective measures, alongside criminal investigations to identify and prosecute offenders.
In 2024, prosecutors initiated legal proceedings in 19,535 cases, about 27 percent of the total, a rate unchanged from the previous year. Decisions to dismiss cases were taken in 4,286 complaints, representing 14 percent, with a quarter of these dismissals linked to withdrawals by complainants.
Spousal violence remained the most reported category. Husbands accounted for 46 percent of suspects, while individuals with no family or personal ties to victims represented 49 percent. Together, these two groups were linked to about 95 percent of recorded cases.
The report notes that serious offences, including physical and sexual violence, were predominantly attributed to non related suspects, while spousal cases were largely linked to family related offences.
