Morocco and Spain have launched a technical review of their submarine electricity interconnection, a routine maintenance step as Rabat pushes to expand power exports to Europe.

Morocco’s ONEE and Spain’s Red Eléctrica have opened an international tender to inspect the two cables linking Tarifa to northern Morocco at depths exceeding 600 meters, according to Spanish media reports. The process includes visual and structural checks, with contracts to be awarded based on technical criteria.

The operation, managed from Tangier, forms part of regular maintenance of a strategic link in service since the late 1990s, following a 1993 bilateral agreement. The interconnection remains central to electricity flows between Morocco and Western Europe.

While no capacity expansion is planned, the review comes as interest in cross-border energy links grows. Morocco is exploring new connections, including a potential direct cable to France, as it scales up renewable energy production for export.
