Moroccan police deny UK media claims over British man’s 'arrest'

The General Directorate of National Security has denied reports published by Daily Mail claiming that a British citizen was arrested and detained while in Morocco, calling the allegations “false and baseless.”

In a statement issued Monday, Moroccan police said they reviewed an article on the British newspaper’s website that contained what they described as inaccurate information and misleading claims regarding the circumstances of an investigation involving the individual.

The report alleged, citing the man’s mother, that he was arrested for distributing food aid to children and subsequently detained without being allowed to contact his family.

Authorities firmly rejected those claims, stating that the individual was neither arrested nor deprived of his liberty or placed in detention. Instead, police said he was subject to a judicial investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor.

According to the statement, the investigation was opened after the man allegedly filmed and published images of individuals without their consent, including minors who are afforded strict legal protection under Moroccan law.

Police said the individual was questioned without being placed in custody and later released pending trial, in accordance with national legal procedures. A court date has been scheduled.

The statement added that officers from the tourist police in Marrakesh identified the individual in Jemaa el-Fnaa square after receiving reports from citizens. He was allegedly recording and sharing digital content showing vulnerable individuals, many of them minors, without their consent or that of their guardians, under the pretext of distributing aid.

Authorities said the individual’s phone was seized for forensic analysis as part of the investigation and that all legal safeguards were respected throughout the process.
