A U.S. congressional bill aimed at designating the Polisario Front as a terrorist organization is gaining traction, with Republican Congresswoman Claudia Tenney joining as a co-sponsor.
The bill, initially introduced in June 2025 by Republican Congressman Joe Wilson, now has nine co-sponsors after Tenney, representing New York’s 24th District, added her support on March 9, according to congressional records.
Earlier this month, Republican Congressman Don Bacon also joined the initiative, urging the U.S. administration to assess whether the Polisario Front should be designated as a foreign terrorist organization and subjected to sanctions under U.S. counterterrorism and human rights legislation.
The proposed legislation would require the U.S. Secretary of State and the Treasury Secretary to submit formal determinations to Congress regarding the Polisario Front’s leadership, foreign connections, military activities, and any alleged links to armed groups or state sponsors recognized by Washington.
Congressman Wilson said the initiative is motivated by concerns over alleged ties between the Polisario Front and actors such as Iran and Hezbollah, which he described as raising security threats in North Africa and jeopardizing the stability of Morocco, a long-time U.S. ally.
Experts note that growing congressional support for the bill indicates that some U.S. lawmakers are increasingly viewing the Moroccan Sahara conflict as a security issue rather than purely a political dispute, and bipartisan backing gives the initiative added weight in Congress.
