A new Republican congressman has joined a US House bill seeking sanctions against the Polisario Front, increasing support for the legislation.
Representative Pat Harrigan of North Carolina’s 10th District became a cosponsor of the bill on February 13, according to congressional records, nearly eight months after it was first introduced in June 2025.
Titled the Polisario Front Terrorist Designation Act, the bill calls on the US administration to determine whether the group can be designated as a foreign terrorist organization and subjected to sanctions under US counterterrorism and human rights laws.
It was introduced by Representative Joe Wilson of South Carolina alongside Democratic cosponsor Jimmy Panetta of California. Since then, it has attracted backing from lawmakers across party lines, including Republicans from Florida, Indiana, and Texas.
If passed, the legislation would require the US secretary of state and the treasury secretary to submit formal determinations to Congress on the Polisario Front’s leadership, foreign links, military activity, and alleged ties to armed groups and state sponsors designated by Washington.
