Provincial authorities in Al Hoceima on Tuesday held an expanded meeting to review emergency measures aimed at limiting the impact of severe weather conditions following an alert issued by the General Directorate of Meteorology.

The meeting of the Provincial Monitoring and Vigilance Committee took place at the provincial headquarters and was chaired by Gov. Fouad Haji. It was attended by senior local officials, security services, local authorities and representatives of relevant government departments.

Officials reviewed preventive and operational measures designed to address the effects of climate fluctuations affecting the province, with a particular focus on avoiding a repeat of the flooding seen recently in the northern city of Ksar el-Kebir.

Haji stressed the importance of the meeting, which forms part of the implementation of royal directives and the activation of the national plan to mitigate the effects of four major natural hazards: heavy rainfall, cold waves, snowfall and flooding.

He called for continued full mobilization and proactive coordination among all stakeholders to protect lives and ensure public safety, especially in mountainous areas. The governor urged authorities to raise alert levels, mobilize human and logistical resources, and position machinery and equipment near vulnerable roads and high-risk zones.

According to information obtained by Hespress EN, authorities have so far reopened 22 unclassified roads and two classified roads damaged by recent rainfall. Medical teams have been reinforced, and essential medicines supplied to health centers near affected areas. Technical crews were also mobilized to ensure the continuity of electricity, water and telecommunications services, while homeless individuals were accommodated in social care facilities across the province.

Haji also called for regular meetings of local vigilance committees to assess conditions on the ground, address challenges immediately and submit detailed reports to the provincial committee for further action.

Officials said the preventive measures are part of broader efforts to avoid scenarios similar to the Ksar el-Kebir floods, which caused significant material losses. The strategy relies on early mobilization of resources, equipment deployment and strengthened coordination to safeguard residents, particularly in mountainous areas considered most vulnerable to extreme weather.

Authorities said the continued coordination is intended to enhance the province’s capacity to manage natural risks, maintain essential services and support sustainable development.
