Tinghir activates flood precautions ahead of Saturday thunderstorms

Authorities in Tinghir province urged residents to avoid riverbeds, low-lying areas and unnecessary travel on Saturday as thunderstorms raise the risk of sudden flooding.

The warning follows forecasts for unstable storm clouds and locally heavy rainfall over the next 72 hours, with flood risk in the province classified at a moderate level.

Officials said heavy downpours could cause water levels in wadis and other waterways to rise rapidly.

Residents were advised not to cross flooded or fast-flowing waterways on foot, by vehicle or with livestock, and to stay away from riverbanks during rainfall.

Authorities also called on people to avoid roads and tracks likely to be submerged, secure livestock and property and postpone non-essential journeys.

Tinghir’s provincial monitoring committee remains in continuous session, coordinating with weather services, Civil Protection, the Royal Gendarmerie, police and other agencies.

Officials urged residents to follow official weather alerts, avoid unverified information circulating on social media and immediately report emergencies or situations threatening people or property.
