Morocco’s National Rally of Independents (RNI) party has approved the referral of Mohamed Chouki’s candidacy for the party’s presidency to its upcoming extraordinary national congress, following the close of the legal deadline for submitting and reviewing leadership bids.

The decision was taken on Wednesday during a meeting of the party’s political bureau at its headquarters in Rabat. Chouki, a member of the political bureau and head of the RNI’s parliamentary group, is the first official candidate to seek the party’s leadership as preparations intensify for the extraordinary congress scheduled for Feb. 7 in the coastal city of El Jadida.

In a statement received by Hespress, the party described Chouki’s nomination as the most significant organizational outcome of the meeting, noting that it comes at a pivotal moment for the party, which currently leads Morocco’s governing coalition. The extraordinary congress is expected to shape the next phase of the party’s internal organization and political direction.

The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister and RNI President Aziz Akhannouch, focused on recent political, social and economic developments, as well as ongoing preparations for the congress. Party leaders see the gathering as an opportunity to strengthen internal cohesion and reorganize party structures ahead of future political challenges.

At the outset of the meeting, the political bureau praised Morocco’s hosting of the Africa Cup of Nations, citing the quality of organization, infrastructure and security arrangements. The party also welcomed what it described as the wisdom of a recent royal statement in responding to attempts to undermine Morocco’s credibility, reaffirming its commitment to King Mohammed VI’s vision of a united Africa based on cooperation, integration and shared expertise.

On the government front, the political bureau commended the performance of the executive in implementing the 2025 finance law. It said the results reflect the effectiveness of the government’s economic and financial choices, pointing to improved growth indicators, stronger foreign currency reserves and a noticeable increase in tax revenues. According to the party, these gains have helped the government meet its social commitments and support citizens’ purchasing power.

Members of the political bureau also expressed satisfaction with the government’s management of public finances, citing control over the budget deficit and a decline in public debt. They reiterated their full support for government programs amid what they described as a delicate and complex international context.

On organizational matters, Rachid Talbi Alami, head of the preparatory committee for the extraordinary congress, presented a detailed report on the state of preparations. He highlighted the level of mobilization and engagement within the committee, as well as the measures taken to ensure the congress’s success on both organizational and political levels.

According to the party’s statement, the political bureau received Mohamed Chouki’s leadership bid after the close of the nomination period and, after reviewing it in line with the party’s statutes and internal regulations, decided to refer it to the extraordinary congress. The final decision will rest with the party’s delegates.

Chouki’s candidacy is expected to be a central focus of political and organizational debate at the congress, as the RNI weighs questions of leadership continuity, management of the next phase, and its role within Morocco’s national political landscape.
