Morocco is expected to face significant weather instability this week, with cold and moist air masses bringing heavy rainfall, snowfall, and a sharp drop in temperatures, especially in mountainous regions and high plateaus, the country’s meteorological service said Thursday.

Hussein Youabed, head of communications at the National Meteorological Directorate, told Hespress AR that the unstable weather will affect a wide range of regions and will be characterized by a distinctly wintry pattern, including strong winds that may become locally severe in some areas.

Snowfall and rainfall forecast

  • Thursday: Snow is expected over the Middle and High Atlas mountains, starting from 2,000 meters, along with rain and occasional thunderstorms in Tangier, Loukos, Rif, Saïs, and the Mediterranean coast, as well as Atlas regions and nearby western areas.
Rainfall will also affect the Atlantic plains north of Essaouira, the northern Eastern region, Souss, and northern parts of the Sahara provinces, accompanied by strong winds and cold weather in the Atlas.

  • Friday: The weather will turn fully winter-like, with snow levels dropping to 1,100 meters in the Atlas and Rif, and 1,200 meters in the eastern high plateaus.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in the north, northwest, Mediterranean coast, Saïs, and Atlas regions, with cloudy skies and rainfall in Souss and northern Sahara provinces.
Temperatures will drop significantly in mountainous areas, and winds will intensify in many regions.

  • Saturday: Unstable conditions will continue, with snowfall from 1,200 to 1,300 meters, and rain and thunderstorms across many regions, especially in the north and center. Daytime temperatures will fall further, with cold to very cold weather over high plateaus and mountains.

Weekend outlook, public safety

From Sunday until the end of the week, unstable weather will persist, with continued risk of rainfall and thunderstorms—locally heavy, particularly in the northwest. Temperatures will remain relatively cold in the Atlas, Rif, southeast, and high plateaus, with a gradual daytime warming starting midweek.

Youabed urged citizens to exercise caution, especially in mountainous areas due to snow accumulation and slippery roads. He also warned of heavy rain, strong winds, and rough sea conditions along the northern and Mediterranean coasts, stressing the importance of following official weather updates.
