Rescue teams in Morocco’s Al Haouz province on Wednesday recovered the body of a third tourist, officials said, after a sudden snow avalanche struck the Toubkal mountain area earlier this week.
The latest victim was identified as a Moroccan tourist from the northern city of Tetouan, local authorities said. The discovery comes after the bodies of a second tourist from Tangier and a mountain guide from the Imlil area were found following days of search operations.
The three victims had been reported missing on Sunday after the avalanche struck the Toubkal region, one of Morocco’s highest and most popular mountaineering zones. The group was part of a larger tourist party that spent the night in a mountain shelter before setting off toward Imlil the following morning, officials said.
Rescue efforts involved specialized teams and heavy equipment, operating under difficult weather conditions. Authorities said the search was conducted with support from the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, civil protection teams, the Royal Gendarmerie, local officials and auxiliary forces.
The search team included 15 members from the Atlas Sniper Battalion of the Royal Armed Forces, nine civil protection personnel, two Royal Gendarmerie officers, six local officials and four auxiliary forces, according to local media.
Authorities said the operation was coordinated by local officials with civil protection and security services, and that logistical resources were mobilized immediately after the incident under the direction of the province’s governor.
The avalanche occurred amid heavy snowfall in the Toubkal region, which has experienced unusually intense winter conditions in recent weeks. Local officials urged residents and visitors to heed weather warnings and avoid travel in dangerous mountain areas.
