Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Monday pledged to uncover the truth with “absolute transparency” following a deadly train crash that killed at least 40 people late Sunday in southern Spain.

Speaking briefly in Adamuz, the Andalusian town where the accident occurred, Sánchez said authorities would fully clarify the causes of the crash. “We will discover the truth,” he said, vowing “absolute transparency and clarity.”

Sánchez also announced three days of national mourning, beginning at midnight Monday and lasting through Thursday, as the country grieves one of its deadliest rail accidents in recent years.

Emergency services continued to work at the scene as investigators launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Spanish authorities have not yet released details on what may have caused the accident.
