Moroccan security forces launched a large-scale operation in Ouarzazate after police officers came under gunfire from suspected drug traffickers during an attempted arrest, according to preliminary information.
Regional security services received precise intelligence from the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance indicating that a utility vehicle was transporting narcotics, sources said. After notifying the competent public prosecutor’s office, police tracked the vehicle and attempted to intercept it.
As officers from the General Directorate of National Security moved in to stop the vehicle, its occupants opened fire, prompting an exchange of gunfire. Security forces succeeded in seizing and impounding the vehicle, while the suspects fled to an unknown destination.
A legal search of the seized vehicle uncovered quantities of narcotics, including cocaine and cannabis, as well as ammunition, a large bladed weapon and a canister of tear gas, authorities said.
Investigators lifted fingerprints from the vehicle as part of ongoing efforts to identify and locate the suspects. Search operations remain underway to arrest those involved, who are suspected of drug trafficking and firing on police officers.
