The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations opened Sunday night in Rabat with a tightly staged ceremony and a surge of public expectation, as Morocco launched its home tournament under the weight of a long wait for continental glory.
Well before kickoff at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, tens of thousands of fans streamed into the stands in an orderly, security heavy operation. As Morocco’s players and coaching staff briefly walked onto the pitch to inspect conditions, the crowd broke into a chant that would echo throughout the evening: “The people want the Africa Cup.”
The slogan captured the mood surrounding the tournament. Morocco have not won AFCON since 1976, and hosting the competition has sharpened public pressure as much as it has raised hopes.

The opening ceremony unfolded against that backdrop, blending sport, spectacle and national symbolism. The stadium was turned into a performance arena featuring choreographed displays, large scale projections and light shows in Morocco’s red and green colors. Video sequences highlighted the six host cities, including Rabat, Fes, Marrakech and Casablanca, underscoring the nationwide scope of the event.
Music and dance performances drew on Moroccan and broader African cultural references, framing the tournament as both a continental celebration and a showcase of the host country’s identity. Fireworks and synchronized visuals closed the ceremony as teams prepared for the opening match between Morocco and Comoros.
Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, addressed the crowd, praising Morocco’s hosting and thanking King Mohammed VI for the reception extended to teams and officials. He wished success to the 24 competing nations and said the tournament had the ingredients to be one of the most memorable in Africa Cup history.
Patrice Motsepe followed by thanking Morocco’s leadership, government and football federation for the organizational effort behind the event. He said CAF remained committed to using football as a unifying force across the continent and cited Morocco’s 2022 World Cup run as a turning point for African football’s global standing.
The ceremony was presided over by Crown Prince Moulay Hassan, adding institutional weight to the opening and reinforcing the political and symbolic importance attached to the tournament.
Despite cool temperatures and intermittent rain, the stands remained packed, with supporters waving flags, wearing national jerseys and maintaining a constant noise level as kickoff approached. Organizers reported smooth crowd flow inside and around the stadium, with heavy police presence and clearly marked access routes.
Away from the venue, Rabat reflected the scale of the occasion. Fan zones, cafes and public squares filled with local residents and visiting supporters from across Africa. CAF said the tournament had already boosted tourism and commercial activity in the capital, with hotels and restaurants operating at high occupancy levels.
