Morocco placed 89 worldwide in the Global Knowledge Index 2025 with a score of 35.9, according to results released by the United Nations Development Programme and the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation.

The index evaluates the knowledge performance of more than 195 countries and is used to assess progress toward building innovation-driven economies.

The index aggregates national performance across six sectors considered foundations of knowledge economies.

These include pre-university education, technical and vocational education, higher education, research and development and innovation, information and communications technology and enabling environments. Morocco’s detailed results show significant variation across these components.

The country registered its highest position in the economy category at rank 59 with 45.9 points. It followed with rank 86 in enabling environments at 40.5 points and rank 87 in information and communications technology at 38.8 points.

Performance fell sharply in education and research. Pre-university education ranked 107 with 44.9 points and research and development and innovation ranked 114 with 27.6 points. Higher education registered the lowest score at 25.2 points, placing Morocco at rank 124.

Within the Middle East and North Africa, Morocco ranked 12, behind several regional peers. The United Arab Emirates led the region at global rank 26, followed by Saudi Arabia at rank 44, Qatar at rank 49 and Bahrain at rank 64.

Jordan, Oman and Tunisia followed, with Kuwait, Iran, Egypt and Lebanon completing the group ahead of Morocco.

Global patterns in the index continue to reflect the dominance of advanced economies with strong investment in innovation systems and high-quality education.

Switzerland topped the 2025 ranking with 67.8 points, followed by Singapore, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Finland and Ireland. Countries at the bottom of the index included the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guinea, Afghanistan and Chad.
