Morocco’s Othmane Maama was named Africa’s Young Player of the Year on Wednesday during the Confederation of African Football’s annual awards ceremony held in Rabat.
Maama, a standout for Morocco’s under-20 national team, earned the honor after playing a decisive role in the squad’s historic victory at the FIFA U-20 World Cup last month in Chile. His performances throughout the tournament cemented his place as one of Africa’s most promising rising talents.
“I am very happy and extremely proud,” Maama said after receiving the award. “I achieved this thanks to the efforts of my teammates and the coaching staff, who helped us win the World Cup.”
The Watford midfielder also thanked his family and agent for their continued support. “My family has always been there for me, and my agent never hesitates to guide me. I owe him a lot on both the professional and personal levels,” he said.
