Diabetes now affects an estimated 2.7 million adults in Morocco and cost more than 1.5 billion dirhams in health spending last year, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection said as the country marked World Diabetes Day on Thursday. Global projections show cases could reach 853 million by 2050, according to the International Diabetes Federation.
The ministry said the disease affects 10.6 percent of Moroccan adults, with a further 10.4 percent in a prediabetic state, half of whom are unaware of their condition. It added that workplace factors such as physical inactivity, stress and unbalanced diets remain significant drivers of rising caseloads, in line with this year’s World Diabetes Day theme, “Diabetes and wellbeing at work”.
The International Diabetes Federation estimates that 589 million people worldwide currently live with diabetes, representing about 10 percent of adults, with numbers rising steadily across all regions. The ministry said national trends mirror this global trajectory and place sustained pressure on Morocco’s health system.
Health insurance data show that diabetes related spending exceeded 1.5 billion dirhams in 2022, according to the National Health Insurance Agency.
The ministry said it is rolling out an integrated programme for prevention, screening and therapeutic education in partnership with public institutions and civil society. Activities scheduled from November 14 to December 15 include screening of high risk groups at primary health facilities, workplace awareness campaigns and media mobilisation to disseminate prevention messages and promote healthier lifestyles.
