Morocco national team coach Walid Regragui spoke Friday about the serious injury sustained by Achraf Hakimi during Paris Saint-Germain’s recent clash with Bayern Munich, affirming that the player has already begun his rehabilitation program with the goal of returning in time for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking at a press conference at the Mohammed VI Center, where he also announced the squad for friendlies against Mozambique and Uganda, Regragui described Hakimi as “an extremely important player both on and off the field.” He emphasized that Morocco’s medical team is closely monitoring Hakimi’s recovery in coordination with PSG’s medical staff.
Regragui noted that the exact duration of Hakimi’s absence remains uncertain, making it premature to confirm his participation in the AFCON. Nevertheless, the coach assured that Hakimi would join the team from the start, supporting his teammates even if not fully match-ready.
Highlighting the strength of Morocco’s medical staff, Regragui said it is among the best in the world, following a strict protocol to ensure players are fully prepared for official competitions. He also acknowledged the challenge of replacing Hakimi at right-back, describing him as “a player of immense caliber,” while noting that Noussair Mazraoui is the primary candidate to occupy the position in the meantime.
Regarding the team’s preparation and choice of friendly opponents, Regragui explained that although Morocco had aimed to face Argentina, circumstances led to matches against Mozambique and Uganda, both respected African sides that have also qualified for AFCON 2025. “Selecting opponents involves multiple factors; we look for teams that are available and suitable for the timing of our preparation,” he said.
The coach also congratulated Hakim Ziyech on his return to competitive football and praised Wydad Athletic Club for signing one of Morocco’s finest players, underscoring Ziyech’s significant contribution to Moroccan football.
Regragui concluded by lauding the Casablanca supporters, describing them as among the best in the world.
