The Trump administration announced Thursday it will cap US refugee admissions at just 7,500 for the 2026 fiscal year, a historic low since the program began in 1980.
Most of the limited slots will reportedly go to white South Africans, according to Associated Press and leaked documents.
The decision, published in the Federal Register, provides no clear justification beyond citing “humanitarian concerns” and “national interest.”
Refugee and human rights groups condemned the move as discriminatory and politically motivated. The International Refugee Assistance Project said it “privileges Afrikaners while continuing to ban thousands of vetted refugees,” while Global Refuge warned the cut “lowers America’s moral standing.” Analysts said the sharp reduction dismantles decades of bipartisan refugee policy and signals a shift toward racially selective admissions.
