Passenger eats passport midair, forcing Ryanair flight diversion

A Ryanair flight from Milan to London last week was forced to divert to Paris after a passenger reportedly tore up and ate parts of their passport during the flight.

The bizarre incident prompted cabin crew to intervene and pilots to make an unscheduled landing for safety reasons.

Witnesses said the passenger tried to flush the remaining pieces of the passport down the lavatory, alarming both staff and travelers. The crew followed safety protocols and notified the cockpit, leading to the plane’s diversion to Paris, where local authorities removed the passenger.

Ryanair confirmed that the crew acted “swiftly and appropriately,” prioritizing passenger safety. One traveler described the tense moments before landing as “the most terrifying 15 minutes of my life.”

Though airlines occasionally report disruptive passengers, destroying and ingesting a passport midair is an unusually extreme case. Under European Union law, travelers must carry valid identification when crossing borders, making the act not only erratic but also a legal violation.
