Moroccan prosecutors said Saturday they had referred 17 people to court following violent unrest in the Sidi Taibi area of Kenitra province earlier this week.
The disturbances on Oct. 1 involved theft, arson, and vandalism targeting both public and private property, according to a statement from the prosecutor’s office at the Kenitra Court of Appeals.
Of those arrested, eight adults were held in police custody and nine minors were detained by the Royal Gendarmerie. Prosecutors requested formal investigations against four of the adults and seven of the minors on suspicion of committing criminal acts. Six others, four adults and two minors, were referred to the prosecutor at the Kenitra Court of First Instance.
The court ordered all 17 suspects held in custody pending further investigation, the statement said, adding that searches are ongoing to locate and arrest additional suspects linked to the unrest.
