Morocco braces for a defining football moment on Friday as the Atlas Lions face Niger in the seventh round of World Cup 2026 qualifiers, with the chance to become the first African side to secure a place at the North American finals.
The decisive match will double as the official inauguration of the newly rebuilt Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, unveiled Thursday by Crown Prince Moulay Hassan on royal instructions from King Mohammed VI.
The national federation described the venue as a “world-class complex,” rebuilt to align with FIFA 2030 standards as Morocco prepares to co-host that tournament alongside Spain and Portugal. With a capacity of 68,700 seats, the stadium features 110 corporate boxes, five hospitality lounges with 5,400 seats, advanced security systems, and accessible spaces for people with disabilities.
It is also the first stadium in Africa to install hybrid turf technology blending natural grass with synthetic fibers, ensuring durability and optimal playing conditions.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation announced that gates would open at 4 p.m. ahead of the 8 p.m. kickoff, stressing that all facilities would be available for fans.
Organizers urged supporters to comply with organizational guidelines to ensure the celebration of both a potential World Cup qualification and the unveiling of Morocco’s flagship sporting arena.
