Moroccan customs authorities seized 64 tons of plastic bags in 2024, marking a sharp 76 percent decline compared to the previous year, according to the annual report of the Administration of Customs and Indirect Taxes.
The report also noted a decrease in confiscated plastic pellets, falling from 115 tons in 2023 to 96 tons in 2024. Officials attributed the decline to targeted operations aimed at dismantling smuggling networks, which disrupted supply chains, and to tighter surveillance of clandestine manufacturing units in warehouses and industrial zones, reducing illicit production nationwide.
Data covering 2016–2024 shows seizures peaking during periods of intensified enforcement, followed by sustained declines, illustrating the deterrent effect of customs actions. The record was set in 2021 with 283 tons seized before volumes began trending downward.
Authorities said the figures confirm the continuing impact of anti-smuggling measures in curbing the illegal plastic trade.
