A Chinese tech company is aiming to revolutionize reproductive technology by developing what could become the world’s first humanoid pregnancy robot capable of carrying a fetus from conception to birth.
Guangzhou-based Kaiwa Technology, founded by entrepreneur Zhang Qifeng, unveiled plans for the innovation during the 2025 World Robot Conference in Beijing.
The company announced that a prototype of the robot, designed to replicate the full gestational process using artificial womb technology, is expected to debut by 2026, with a projected price tag of less than 100,000 yuan (about $13,900).
“This is not just an incubator,” Zhang said in an interview on Douyin, China’s counterpart to TikTok. “The device can replicate everything from conception to delivery.”
The robot employs synthetic amniotic fluid and a nutrient-supplying hose system to mimic the conditions of a human pregnancy. Unlike traditional neonatal incubators, this machine is designed to support fetal development from the earliest stages, offering what Zhang describes as a complete artificial gestation environment.
The company has already engaged in discussions with provincial authorities in Guangdong to explore the ethical, legal, and policy implications of the technology. Proposals have reportedly been submitted for legislative review.
The announcement was one of several cutting-edge biotechnology showcases at the conference. Other breakthroughs included GEAIR, an AI-powered breeding robot developed to speed up crop hybridization through autonomous gene editing.
While still in the prototype phase, Kaiwa’s pregnancy robot is drawing global attention for its potential to reshape reproductive healthcare. However, as development progresses, the technology is likely to spark intense debates over bioethics, regulatory oversight, and the future of human childbirth.
