Morocco continues to struggle for visibility in the Shanghai Ranking of the world’s top 1,000 universities, with only Hassan II University of Casablanca making the cut in the 2025 edition released Friday, August 15.
The institution was listed in the 901–1000 bracket, though it achieved a stronger showing in the field of Human Biological Sciences, ranking in the global Top 400.
The global hierarchy remained largely unchanged, with Harvard again leading ahead of Stanford and MIT. The rest of the Top 10 features Cambridge, Berkeley, Oxford, Princeton, Columbia, Caltech, and the University of Chicago, with Caltech moving up one place compared to 2024. In France, Paris-Saclay retained its status as the top-ranked institution, at 13th.
Across the MENA region, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, and Turkey each placed one university, while Qatar had three. In Africa, South Africa stood out with five entries, led by the University of Cape Town in the 201–300 bracket.
