US defense contractor L3Harris Technologies has secured a contract to modernize the Royal Moroccan Air Force’s fleet of C-130 Hercules aircraft, according to an official statement released by the company.
Under the agreement, L3Harris will upgrade the avionics systems, carry out depot-level maintenance, and perform engine repairs on the aircraft. Additional logistical and operational support will also be provided as part of the deal.
The modernization aims to improve the readiness of Morocco’s C-130 fleet for a wide range of missions, including tactical airlift, humanitarian assistance, and special operations.
“This historic agreement marks the beginning of a long-term strategic partnership with the Royal Moroccan Air Force to ensure the fleet is ready for any mission,” said Jason Lambert, an L3Harris official. “By leveraging our team’s proven expertise in avionics, we will deliver scalable modifications that enhance C-130 performance and extend service life.”
Moroccan security expert Abderrahmane Mekkaoui said the deal’s primary objective is to modernize the backbone of the country’s military aviation fleet.
He noted that the C-130s have played a crucial role in bolstering security across the Moroccan Sahara, not only by transporting equipment and personnel, but also by supporting commando missions, combating organized crime, and backing artillery units in remote regions.
“These aircraft have proven effective over the years and are an essential part of Morocco’s regional defense capabilities,” Mekkaoui said. “The upgrade reflects the country’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its military and staying aligned with advances in aerial warfare technology.”
Mekkaoui added that Morocco hopes to continue using the legacy C-130s to help secure the Sahara region, but with enhanced technological features. He emphasized that modern avionics systems will not only improve performance in combat and logistics missions but also enhance the aircrafts’ ability to gather and analyze intelligence, contributing to faster responses to emerging threats.
Political analyst Mohamed Choukr underscored the broader geopolitical implications of the deal, describing it as a “significant step forward” in Morocco’s military cooperation with the United States.
“This agreement strengthens bilateral military ties at a time of major strategic shifts in the Middle East and North Africa,” Choukr said. “It comes during a period of global political and security instability and demonstrates the United States’ continued trust in Morocco as a reliable strategic ally in countering security threats.”
Choukr said the agreement goes beyond technical assistance, signaling a long-term defense relationship between the two countries rooted in cooperation across security, intelligence, and defense fields.
He added that Morocco stands to benefit from the deal by boosting its defense capabilities while reinforcing its role as a pillar of regional stability in an increasingly volatile region.
“The military partnership between Rabat and Washington will remain a cornerstone of Morocco’s foreign policy, both in terms of regional security and enhancing the country’s political and economic standing,” Choukr said.
