Morocco’s melon exports have sharply declined in 2024, falling to their lowest level in years, despite a record-breaking performance in 2023, according to data from EastFruit.
In 2023, Morocco exported around 57,000 tons of melons, a 25% increase from 2022, surpassing the five-year average and signaling a sector rebound. July 2023 alone saw a historic monthly record, with 12,000 tons of cantaloupe exported, 12 times more than in the same month the year prior.
This surge was largely driven by adverse weather in competing markets like Spain, where rain and cold temperatures severely affected harvests, giving Moroccan producers a temporary edge.
However, that momentum did not carry into 2024. While specific figures for the current year have yet to be released, EastFruit reports a marked downturn amid shifting climate patterns, water scarcity, and tighter scrutiny on water-intensive crops like melon and watermelon in drought-prone regions.
