After four years of steady decline, Morocco’s lemon exports are showing signs of recovery.
During the first half of the 2024/2025 marketing season (October to March), the country exported 6,100 metric tons of lemons, generating 27 million dirhams in revenue, its highest since 2020/2021 and nearly matching all of last year’s earnings.
According to EastFruit, lemons rank third among Morocco’s citrus exports, far behind mandarins and oranges.
Even in its best year (2019/2020), lemon exports reached just 17,000 tons, seven times less than oranges and 23 times less than mandarins.
Though smaller in volume, lemons play a strategic role in diversifying Morocco’s citrus portfolio thanks to their year-round availability, unlike the seasonal fluctuations of mandarins.
Exports had hit a low of 5,000 tons in 2023/2024, mainly due to drought conditions in 2022 and 2023 that severely impacted yields.
