The installed energy from renewables in Morocco increased by more than 5% between 2021 and 2025, reaching a total of 12 gigawatts of installed energy, the Minister of Energy Transition, Leila Benali, announced on Tuesday in Rabat.
This milestone includes more than 5.4 gigawatts generated from renewable sources. According to Benali, this achievement was made possible through key legislative reforms.
Benali provided these updates during the Upper House’s question time, reiterating that the National Energy Strategy, launched by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in 2009, is built on three key pillars: renewable energy, energy efficiency, and regional integration.
She further added that Morocco is implementing an unprecedented investment program aimed at quadrupling annual investments in renewable energy and quintupling investments in the electricity grid, emphasizing that this momentum has contributed to reducing electricity costs and increasing the use of clean and renewable sources.
Regarding energy efficiency, Benali highlighted that in 2021, after a period of delay, the ministry launched several programs aimed at rationalizing consumption, including the widespread use of energy-saving bulbs and the revision of partnership agreements with regions, particularly the Oriental region, to renovate public lighting, public buildings, and mosques.
She further noted that efforts included the agricultural and services sectors, in addition to establishing energy performance standards for public buildings.
