Authorities in the Casablanca-Settat region are expediting the relocation of residents from informal settlements as part of a major urban renewal effort ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host.
According to sources speaking to Hespress, residents of smaller informal communities have already begun moving into newly built housing across Casablanca and nearby suburbs. Relocation from larger areas—such as the Rahmouna settlement in Sidi Moumen and “Karian Bih” in Ain Sebaa—is set to begin in September, once ongoing construction is complete.
The initiative is part of Morocco’s broader “Cities Without Slums” national program, which aims to deliver approximately 63,000 housing units to residents of unplanned neighborhoods across greater Casablanca.
Authorities plan to start distributing apartment keys to eligible families once administrative procedures are finalized and temporary dwellings are dismantled. In recent days, nearly 1,000 apartment keys were handed out in the Al-Hay Hassani district, marking the first phase of the operation.
Rahmouna, one of Casablanca’s largest informal settlements, has been prioritized for clearance ahead of the upcoming sports tournaments.
Housing Minister Fatima Zahra Mansouri has said that while around 300,000 families have already been resettled, an estimated 150,000 families still live in informal housing across the country.
