Essaouira once again will host the iconic Gnaoua and World Music Festival, from 19 to 21, 2025. This 26th edition offers lovers of Gnaoua music a strong ground to celebrate fusion, emotion, and cultural innovation.
The Gnaoua and World Music Festival is a great opportunity to celebrate the richness of Gnaoua heritage by opening a dialogue with music from all over the world, and making Essaouira an international crossroads, in which tradition meets modernity.
The festival is set to open with a concert featuring Maâlem Hamid El Kasri, the Senegalese Bakalama dance company, and singers Abir El Abed and Kya Loum, blending Moroccan trance traditions with Senegalese rhythms.
Maâlem Houssam Gania will also be performing with American jazz drummer Marcus Gilmore for a transcultural musical dialogue, while Maâlem Mohamed Boumezzough will collaborate with international artists from Mali and France in a daring musical experiment.
Highlighting the festival’s commitment to contemporary global sounds, Afrobeats sensation CKay, famed for the hit “Love Nwantiti,” will also take the stage, bringing his unique Afro-Emo style to the Moroccan audience.
Beyond performances, the festival is also a center for cultural development, with partnerships like the one with Berklee College of Music and the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University. These initiatives aim to establish a university Chair focused on cultural hybridity, inspired by the Gnaoua experience.
For over 25 years, the Gnaoua Festival has stood as a beacon of Moroccan and African cultural expression, blending heritage with innovation. This year’s edition promises to be unforgettable, continuing to build bridges through music and shared human experiences.
