France will open a new visa application center in Laayoune, the capital of Morocco’s southern provinces, on May 10, in a move aimed at expanding consular services and strengthening ties with residents in the region.
A diplomatic source told Hespress AR that the inauguration ceremony will be attended by Christophe Lecourtier, the French Ambassador to Morocco, alongside a delegation of officials from the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region, local elected representatives, and tribal leaders from the Sahara.
The new center, operated by TLS Contact on behalf of the French authorities, will handle visa application intake and provide administrative and technical support for residents of the southern provinces. The facility is expected to ease travel burdens by eliminating the need to visit major cities like Casablanca or Rabat, and is set to improve service quality and processing times.
This initiative aligns with France’s previous announcement to broaden its consular reach in Morocco’s southern territories. Observers see the move as a diplomatic signal of support for Morocco’s autonomy plan in the disputed Western Sahara.
The presence of senior French officials in Laayoune underscores international interest in the development of the region and is expected to boost economic and administrative momentum, reinforcing Laayoune’s status as a strategic regional hub.
