Police in Laayoune have arrested a man suspected of producing and selling forged academic diplomas and professional training certificates in a case that highlights growing concerns over document fraud on social media.

According to a statement released Thursday, April 24, by the Directorate General of National Security (DGSN), the arrest followed a criminal investigation prompted by suspicious ads circulating on social media platforms. These posts allegedly offered counterfeit diplomas for sale, prompting police to launch a probe.

The investigation led to the identification of two suspects, with one currently in custody. A search of the suspect’s premises yielded a substantial cache of fraudulent materials, including:

  • 69 fake diplomas

  • 28 forged equivalency certificates linked to vocational training credentials

  • 47 blank diploma application forms

  • 8 counterfeit institutional stamps from various training institutes

Police also seized a central computer unit and a digital storage device believed to contain evidence of the illicit activity. Additionally, authorities recovered a bank card and 16 receipts from money transfer services, allegedly linked to payments received from the sale of forged documents.

The detained suspect is currently under investigation under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office. Authorities are continuing their search for a second suspect, whose identity has already been established.

The case has sparked renewed attention on digital platforms being used for document fraud, raising questions about how to monitor and regulate online sales of falsified educational credentials.
